Meet Our Committee Members

Hello, my name is Kelly Greenwell, my pronouns are he/him, and I am the staff resource person for QVCC's Equity Committee.  I am a white settler who was born on Nuu-Chah-Nulth territory and moved to lək̓ʷəŋən territory as a youth. I was part of the original discussions that sparked the creation of Equity Committee and have seen it make a difference at Quadra Village Community Centre.

As someone who has attended Equity Committee since the beginning, I have learned a great deal from Equity Committee members that helps my work as Executive Director. I have also seen the Committee's work shape how the staff at QVCC works with community.  I am looking forward to seeing how the Equity Committee will continue to help Quadra Community Centre welcome and respond effectively to community members of all identities and cultures.

My name is Naomi Cheah. I work in the British Columbia Public Service (BCPS), where I focus on policy, coaching, and inclusive workplace practices. I am a certified coach and recently completed the University of British Columbia (UBC) Micro-certificate in Anti-Racism.

As a Southeast Asian, cis-gender woman and former newcomer to North America, I have faced discrimination in both school and work. These experiences shaped my understanding of how bias affects people’s confidence, opportunities, and sense of belonging. They also strengthened my commitment to advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and helping create spaces where everyone feels respected and supported.

I have volunteered on the Equity Committee at the Quadra Village Community Centre (QVCC) since April 2025. When I first arrived in Canada, community services played a key role in helping me settle and feel connected. This is why the committee’s work matters to me—I know firsthand how inclusive, welcoming spaces can change someone’s experience of a new community.

I hope to bring my lived experience, my training in anti-racism, my experience supporting inclusive workplace initiatives in BCPS, and my coaching skills to help QVCC continue growing as a welcoming, safe, and inclusive place for everyone.

The Equity Committee means a great deal to me because it represents a space where people with complex, intersecting identities can finally be heard. As someone who is gender-diverse, low-income, neurodivergent, and a single parent, I know firsthand how easily voices like mine are overlooked in community decision-making. This committee gives me the opportunity to contribute from lived experience, to advocate for people who face similar barriers, and to help shape a community that is genuinely accessible and welcoming for everyone.

Being part of the Equity Committee reminds me that meaningful change often begins at the local level with people sitting together, listening, learning, and actively choosing to do better for one another. It gives me a sense of purpose, belonging, and connection to my neighbourhood, and it motivates me to continue working toward a more inclusive, compassionate Quadra Village.

Hello, my name is Ethan Louie. I am member of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth First Nations, with my family originating from Ahousaht British Columbia. I have had the privilege to call the lək̓ʷəŋən territories my home for my entire life. I have been a member of the Equity Committee since February 2025 when I was hired as the Indigenous Cultural Coordinator for the Community Centre. I will be going into my 8th year working at the centre this coming April as I have been a part of our school aged childcare programs since April 2018.

I find the work that we do at the community centre integral to creating a safe and inclusive community for everyone who lives in and comes to the Hillside Quadra Community, especially the community centre. The work that the Equity Committee does is integral to ensuring that our programs, policies and overall culture of our community is safe, inclusive and equitable.

My name is Sophie Chen, I use She/they pronouns, and I am a member of the QVCC’s Equity Committee. I joined the Equity Committee both in my capacity as a member of the QVCC’s Board, as well as to speak to my experience as a racialized settler on Lekwungen territories. As a second-generation Chinese migrant, my lived experience informs my belief in the need for systemic change and the essential role that community service providers have in ensuring that folks can reach their full potential. Being a part of the Equity Committee has allowed me to remain connected to my community and the neighbourhood in which I live, and to have a voice in ensuring that QVCC’s services are accessible and welcoming for folks who experience marginalization.

My involvement with the Equity Committee at the Quadra Village Community Centre has been deeply meaningful experience. Being part of this work has allowed me to contribute to creating a more welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for our community.

What I value most about this committee is the opportunity to listen, learn, and collaborate with others who are committed to equity and social justice. Together, we strive to ensure that every voice is heard and that our community centre reflects the diversity and resilience of the people it serves.

This experience has not only strengthened my connection to the community but has also deepened my understanding of the importance of equity work in everyday spaces. I am grateful to be part of a committee that is dedicated to making positive and lasting change.
